Telling Tales-Fantasy and Contempory design V&A

''First they entered a fine large hall magnificantly furnished then passed through several spacious rooms in the same style of grudeur! but all appears forsaken and desolate.''
Jack and The Bean stake -Marah Mana Murlock

first impressions of the exhibition:
peaceful, surrounded by the sound of birds chirping.
sweet and dreamlike great environment to draw and study the work. Feeling of innocence.

The forest glade-

Linen Cupboard- Jurgen Bay 2002
This piece is build with all found materials, He gathered furniture, the textiles, mattress and the stone. The Age of innocence, I got the feeling of comfort and content.Sweet use of fabrics and patterns. The overall colour of the piece is very neutral and simplistic. It is a reminder of my childhood, the feeling of pure happiness. The construction of the house resembles the play tent I used to make.

''The fairy tale which to this day is the first tutor of children because it was once the first tutor of mankind, secretly lives onthe story. The first time story tellers is, and will continue to be, the teller of fairy tellers''
Walter Benjamin

Princess Chair- Tord Boontje-
Soft mellow cream colour, suggests elegance and the life of luxury.
A little girls fantasy.

The Enchanted Castle-

Smoke Mirrors-maarten Bass-
Dark and disturbing atmosophere to the mirror. The frame is made up of charred wood, when looking a far the wood surface looks perfect but on close inspection the piece looks distressed and old.

The two displays on either side of the Enchanted Castle are a huge comparison. The left display is decorated in rich gold, a conspicuous display of wealth. The pieces aren't as spread out as the other display. The sculptures are visually stunning with a mix and matched theme. They have used silver floor boards which makes it difficult to concentrate on the objects individually.

Display opposite-
For the wall decoration they have blown up the big black and white old fashion pattern and used dim lighting which created a chilling atmosphere. Dark, on edge music. The furniture is well spaced out. Furniture disfigured aged and historical looking.

After viewing this exhibition I have a better understanding of layouts and lighting. Was good that I was able to understand and compare the way i work to the spacious presentation. The V&A created a dramatic environment in which to view the work.

Heaven and hell

Do You Hear what Hear- Kelly Mc Callen

Dark piece,There is a life and death glare in the foxes eyes.Shows sad emotions, the fox has been captured in a lively stance. The artist has approached the piece in a cold way, she has embellished the taxidermy fox with gold maggots crossing the idea of preserving life and showing death to the eye.

The Pyramids of Makkum' tulip vase- Jurgen Bey
Pixelated chair-Jurgen Bey

I have chosen to compare two of Jurgens Beys pieces.
The pixelated chair has been made up of wood and embroidered felt, resembles an elegant 18 century chair with a modern twist. Jurgen Bey has deliberately used poor quality materials to make a point.''The Pyramids of Makkum' tulip vase was made along the same lines, In the late 17 century tulip vases became status objects. Jurgen collated with four comtemporary artist and recreated the Tulip Vase using ten-glazed earhenware. The difference between the two pieces is the use of materials and the delicate detail. the chair is a much more masculine example of work compared to the '' tulip vase''. The colours are much more bold in the chairs below.

rough Guide Objects

Object 0ne:
Hard shelled cardboard circular box, covered with red , creme and blue cotton flower fabric.
Inside is an embroidered petal shaped fabric sample, supporting a birds nest.
Twigs and hay with three small aged birds eggs. Stuffed blue yellow and green bird placed inside the nest good condition.
Made me think about Assorted box's and collections, Fur coats the vintage culture, old fashion surface patterns, interesting objects found at the market. If this object was placed in a museum or
gallery the piece would look inappropriate and out of place. The beauty of the object is in the eye of the beholder and is very specific to taste.

Object two:
Stacked up vintage cardboard boxs, printed logos. Use of masking tape and staples to construct the box's together. From cereals logo's too house hold appliances. The box's date back to the sixtie's.
Made me think of descarded rubbish, big quantity's and collectors.
The boxs work because of its surroundings, the layouts and the objects placed around the shop. These objects would be seen as rubbish if placed in a museum or market stall space.

Object 3

Bethnal Green Mueseum of Chidhood-
complete dolls house. Two stories the exterior are made out of wood and glass. The interior is made out of wood, ceramic tiles stainless steel and fabrics. The house is put together with nails, screws and door fastening.Earthy colours are used, greens creams and browns.Minature objects for specific rooms, stainless steel pots and pans. wooden floors. Delicate and detailed workmanship. Is a reminder of my youth. Makes me think of the period house holds, classic fairytales, content homely feel. This object could be placed at a market stall or a boutique. Very aged and vintage and without the historical background can still translates as a beautiful work of art.
